Giving and Gratitude

Today is #Giving Tuesday!

GivingTuesday is a global day committed to giving back to our communities. Today, we all come together to celebrate generously and give! There are so many different charities and nonprofits, all with different missions, and all equally deserving. But why give?

One of the best things about giving (no matter how - whether it is financial, an item, or by volunteering) is the gratitude one feels from that giving - a "giver's high."  Gifting has been associated with both mental health and physical benefits. Some of these advantages include higher self-esteem, lower depression, and lower stress levels (International Journal of Psychophysiology, 2006)!

The act of giving lights up the mesolimbic pathway and triggers endorphins to be released, and as such, the pleasure centers within the brain are triggered (ational Institute of Health, 2006). This has been associated with a happier and longer life.

Also, the acts of giving (and receiving!) has been linked to other aspects of mental health including better mood, less anxiety, more energy, and better relationships.

Enjoy the true meaning of the holiday season - giving to others. Welcome to the holidays and carry this through out!
